Introduction to Pattern Drafting / Creating other styles from an existing garment:
Exact dates coming soon Level: I know how to sew and have already made a few clothes. However, I find it difficult to find patterns I like and have a hard time making all the adjustments necessary in order to achieve a good fit. I wish I could draw my own styles and create variations of an existing pattern already adjusted to my measurements. Minimum 2 students / Maximum 4 students Materials: Tutorial and paper included. 2 meters of muslin included Price: $ 275 taxes included |
This course is an introduction to the techniques that will allow you to add style elements to existing sewing patterns. This course is for those who wish to be able to copy existing clothes and develop variations through flat cutting techniques. The content of this course is a condensed and simplified version of the teachings given in Fashion Design programs, but tailored to the needs of our students who seek to explore the wonderful world of design for themselves, for the fun of it. Please note that if you are looking for a professional training or a diploma, this is not that our mandate.
A session of 5 classes that will help you to learn the basics of pattern drafting:
Course 1: How to copy an existing garment. Drafting a pattern from a garment that you like and fits you well.
Course 2: Examining the basic rules of a good fit. Making a fitting muslin and correcting the pattern.
Homework: Style research and selection of a style you would like to develop during the last class.
Course 3: Exploring different pattern drawing techniques on miniatures (modification of the lengths, creation of yokes, dart transfer, adding flare and volume).
Course 4: Exploration of different pattern drawing techniques on miniatures (creation of pleats and gathers). Drafting a development plan in miniature for your personal project (finalize the development plan as homework if necessary).
Course 5: Developing the sewing pattern of your personal project in real size.

Suggestion of Basic Garments to Copy for the Introduction to Pattern Drafting Course
Please note that your basic garment (the one we will be copying) must have the least possible style detail; meaning no yokes, pleats or gathers. It should ideally have darts (unless you want to develop your own styles from stretchy clothes, like a sweater :) The garment should already have a fit that you like. Being an introductory course, blouses, coats, jackets and vests and are not good options for this level. We will be happy to guide you with those once you have graduated from level 1 :)

Here are the main flat cutting techniques you will be learning during the course
(and some examples of the possibilities they offer you) Our pedagogical approach in this course will focus on understanding the basic techniques of flat cutting. We show you images to explain the possibilities, but will not be able to make the development plan for the 55 styles shown above for lack of time. By learning the techniques, you can easily repeat it on different garments once made at home thanks to your class notes :)
